Charting The Digital Transformation Journey For A Chemical Firm

Find out how we helped a leading specialty chemicals company chart and execute its digital transformation journey in order to meet its future targets and become a global partner of choice in its market segment.

Together, we transform the future.

The client, a speciality chemicals manufacturer, wanted to digitally transform its finance and IT systems and processes to become a global partner of choice for leading consumers in its market and boost its revenue as a part of its five-year vision.

The key issues the client faced were:

  • Business processes were being executed manually with very minimal automation.
  • System support was minimal. The system supported digitisation to a certain extent but workflows, automation, etc., were almost non-existent.
  • Some of the core systems and applications were old or did not meet the required functional coverage and needed upgrades.
  • Systems were not integrated and data sets were disparate.
  • Organisational hierarchy did not have defined roles and responsibilities.

How did PwC India help?

PwC India designed a digital roadmap for the client in the following areas:

  • Finance transformation and SAP upgrades: We recommended to-be financial processes such as accounts payable and fixed assets. We captured the requirements and carried out implementation for consumption-based accounting and R&D processes in SAP.
  • IT strategy and transformation: We recommended the overall IT roadmap and defined enterprise architecture (EA). The focus areas include SAP, data and analytics, EA and functional applications, information security, infrastructure and IT organisation.
  • IT platform evaluation: We evaluated potential tools and suggested the best fit for the client for areas like client relationship management (CRM), analytics, productivity suite, robotic process automation (RPA) and chatbots, low code/no code (LCNC) and learning management system (LMS).

Our impact

  • Provided an integrated view of multi-crore IT investment, spread across five waves till 2026, for the overall transformation journey which included recommending fit-for-purpose solutions for CRM, enterprise resource planning (ERP), LMS, etc., to automate business processes.
  • Recommended fit-for-purpose solutions for productivity suite, project management system, RPA and chatbots, LCNC tools, etc., for workflow automation.
  • Recommended the required upgrades to some critical systems to cover business requirements. Provided visibility of SAP investment case for current ERP upgrades and migration to S/4HANA.
  • The transformation included an integration strategy and platform for better exchange of data between various systems along with integrated security architecture to prevent data loss and mitigate IT security lapses.
  • Came up with the target state organisation structure to enable the transformation roadmap. Defined the target state IT operating model detailing out roles and responsibilities.
  • Enabled manufacturing digitisation, better reporting and monitoring capabilities through analytics investment case and implementation roadmap.
