From the initial steps of acquiring opportunities for the organisations, analysing how well the agents meet the ask and establishing them for success, the flourishing path reflects the similar processes for human HR. 

Onboarding isn’t just about switching ON the software, it’s about positioning agents with the right teams, providing them secure system accesses, and ensuring they are equipped enough to work together with their human colleagues. Standard operations require recurring monitoring, performance reviews, maintenance, compliance checks and system enhancements, mirroring the management of employee performance. The exit processes of withdrawing agents and archival of their learnings is an absolute replica of the traditional offboarding of employees.

The actual contrast lies in how organisations approach agent lifecycle governance. In this scenario, the technology team isn’t just the one in the driver’s seat. Successful digital workforces need combined attention of automation experts, COE, cyber security experts, legal counsel, risk and compliance teams, domain specialists etc. Collaboratively, they should incorporate the rules of engagement, initiate how agents are onboarded, assessed, upgraded or decommissioned, while making sure everything runs safely and ethically. Independence and governance: Finding the right balance

The inherent autonomy that defines AI agents also add to the complexity to their governance. One of the critical challenges posed by agents is in fact, their ability to make decisions without human intervention. Unlike traditional software systems that followed strict rule-based programming, AI agents are designed using machine learning algorithms to analyse tasks, analyse and determine the necessary action based on their reasoning. In high-value, high-risk areas such level of independence could have undesired outcomes. This therefore creates a dilemma for leaders to find the right balance between the level of autonomy for agents and the need to control them with the right guardrails. 

As more and more agentic systems evolve with higher levels of sophistication, the decisions they make may not be easy for humans to interpret. Simpler rule-based systems with traceable logic had a level of predictability. However, AI-based decisions based on reasoning powered by complex machine learning models can pose significant challenges without a human in the loop.  What if the self-driving vehicles increased the number of road safety incidents based on bad decisions, or a healthcare agent provided incorrect diagnoses. Since historical data forms the backbone for AI systems to learn from, it is important for the data to be rid of any biases for the AI system to learn correctly. Data governance, continuous risk evaluations, transparency in workflows, compliance, user awareness - all the practices that applied to traditional AI governance, apply to agentic systems as well. But with the agentic AI, governance frameworks need to be more advanced given the increased levels of sophistication of these systems.

The conventional process of testing models before deployment worked effectively for the less complex GenAI implementation. With AI agents, organisations can consider creating simulated environments for testing to understand the outcomes without actually inviting real-world consequences before fully deploying them. This sandboxing allows teams to observe and understand the anticipated and unanticipated outcomes before deploying the agents in real processes. This can be especially valuable in use cases requiring higher ethical consideration like self-driving vehicles or healthcare.

Embedding AI override mechanisms

Governance frameworks must be developed with in-built mechanisms for:

  • Explainability & interpretability to ensure decisions taken by AI agents are transparent at all times and the reasoning is clear to the developers

  • Bias and fairness management methods are effectively leveraged for faster detection and mitigation of unfair outcomes

  • Anomaly detection and self-correction - while training AI to autonomously correct errors or alert humans for corrective actions, peer-to-peer agent monitoring is another way to rectify errors when things go wrong. Just like humans collaborate within their ecosystem, agents can also engage with other agents to gather peer reviews. Though developers will have to monitor these interactions and establish proper rules, agents can be made to work together harmoniously.

With frequent changes in regulatory environment, governance rules and frameworks should also adapt dynamically to allow AI models to learn and constantly evolve. Automating model retraining can prove effective to ensure continued regulatory compliance

Beyond these practices, agentic governance should incorporate self-learning mechanisms that continuously refine and update governance models based on user sentiment and feedback, incident response and audit reports. This method of monitoring through a continuous feedback loop allows better tracking and evaluation of agent performance.

Monitoring and reporting is yet another pivotal category, emphasizing the importance of tracking key metrics to maintain both stakeholder and regulatory compliance. In addition to this, human autonomy is also required to understand, implement and monitor agents effectively.   

Accountability and compliance help in identifying responsibilities to meet legal and ethical merits. Fairness and Bias parameter helps the need to monitor and amplify the AI model’s performance to ensure consistent and unbiased decisions. This cannot be achieved without the model of a transparent framework which enables the agent to cater to all relevant stakeholders. These parameters collectively form an extensive framework for the prevalent automation governance, accentuating the integration of critical considerations to intensify agent management and decision-making processes.

Future of work with Agentic AI

There is a definitive shift from human-led, manual processes to AI-powered systems where autonomous agents are handling tasks alongside their human counterparts with greater speed and precision. This transformation is not only expected to deliver cost benefits for businesses but also unlock newer revenue channels and growth opportunities that will allow businesses to deliver services faster and at a much larger scale. 

However, as agents become increasingly autonomous in their decision making and actions, it can lead to newer risks and challenges that businesses will have to plan for. For instance, HR as a function will have to evolve as it goes on to manage a workforce that includes humans and agents. It will require a completely different set of skills to manage a blended workforce while devising methods to source, build and measure human talent. As agents autonomously carry out all routine and repetitive work, organisations will need to prepare humans to assume high-skill role

Additionally, since agents can be partly/fully autonomous, they require human supervision. Organisations will have to balance the need to innovate, the cost of innovation and the expected ROI as they deploy these agents. They will need to create both quantitative and qualitative methods to measure human-agent team performance. This will also need to be followed up with further development of governance models to manage organisational and societal risks.
