I joined the firm, straight from college, with no experience in the corporate sector. After just five months of working, I was aligned to work with a high profile client. It was a key project for us with more than 100 resources working on it. I was given the responsibility to manage the project end to end in the East. Honestly, it was a humongous responsibility and I was a bit anxious initially. But the kind of trust and support I received from the seniors and my team is indescribable. It gave me immense confidence and within a month I was attending meetings, trainings and dealing with multiple teams on daily basis. This was a huge confidence boost for me, something I still cherish and appreciate in my personal and professional life.

Coming from a family of businessmen, I always wanted to tread a different path and start my professional journey with an MNC or a consulting company. As luck would have it, I landed in PwC in the Bengaluru office in April 2007 through a campus interview. From being considered for a challenging role way different from the one I was initially hired for, to being the reason I enjoyed my first pay cheque, first flight travel and international assignment and the experience of gifting a car to my dad, this is the place where a small town boy like me could dare to plan, fail and learn again and turn into a true professional. I am indebted to all the leaders, peers and colleagues who gave me the opportunity to interact, learn, observe and hone skills for life.

Moving beyond the comfort zone

When I joined PwC a quarter century ago, I was given a lot of difficult projects to manage from very early on. In a couple of years, I was sent on a complex international assignment in Brazil. Right from working with the team where all documentation including the system language was in Portuguese, surviving as a vegetarian in a predominantly non vegetarian landscape, or going shopping in markets where not a word of English is understood, the challenges seemed limitless. However, this experience proved invaluable to my career. Having travelled to and worked in over 25 countries over the last 25 years, I can see that I learned many of the basics of being an effective global leader in those early days with PwC. I can confidently say this opportunity opened up a world of possibilities for me.

I started my career with the firm in November 2006 and played a long inning here till May 2018. This journey has been both exciting and rewarding. As a fresher, it was a whole new world for me. With no experience in hand, the only two things I started off with were my dedication and will to learn. I was still new to the professional space and had never touched laptops. It is at the firm where I acquired the business acumen and management skills by working across departments on diversified assignments. In addition, the flexibility option of working half day at the firm was a boon for me post the birth of my child. The environment was very caring and I readily received support to work from home or leave early when required. I am filled with great respect and gratitude for everyone around me who helped me excel and reach where I am today.
