The Special Economic Zone Rules, 2006 (SEZ Rules) were notified to deal with the establishment, operation, incentives, operations and compliances to be undertaken by a developer and unit. Based on periodic stakeholder consultations and with a focus on promoting economic activity in the SEZs and extending facilitation measures, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has notified time to time amendments in the SEZ Rules. As a continued process, the Ministry of Commerce has now notified1 amendments to the SEZ Rules via the Special Economic Zones (Amendment) Rules, 2025 (Amended Rules) to extend certain facilitations and flexibility so as to promote the semiconductor and electronic components sector. These also include provisions dealing with manufacturing services for overseas entities, among other amendments. These amendments notified on 3 June 2025 stands operationalised.
