As part of our Earth Hour initiative in March 2017, PwC India Foundation (PwCIF) ran a campaign that encouraged our employees to purchase solar lanterns. In return, PwCIF pledged to purchase and distribute the same number of lanterns to communities we support.
In May 2017, PwCIF in collaboration with NGO Parmath Samaj Sevi Sansthan distributed 1000 lanterns to ten villages in the Bundelkhand district of Uttar Pradesh, a region we also provide on-ground support to mitigate drought.
Akansha’s story from a village in Bundelkhand
Akansha is a tenth standard student in a village in Bundelkhand district. Lack of electricity demotivated her to study and she would spend a lot of her time playing with other children in the aangan. However, she is now able to study and complete her homework even when there is no electricity. She says “Ab ghar mein solar lamp se raat mein bhi padhai ho jati hai aur school ka kaam poora kar sakte hai. Hum khush hai”. Her family is happy too, especially her father who smiles seeing his children study using solar lanterns.
